Leading Towns
Kenya’s top towns by municipal status are Nairobi, Mombasa, Kisumu, Nakuru and Eldoret. All five have
city status and, apart from Kisumu and Nakuru, boast hosting international airports. Nairobi is of course
the leader by virtue of being the nation’s capital, followed by Mombasa that is the main sea port and
tourist resort city. Mombasa is also only second to Nairobi in manufacturing mainly because it is Kenya’s
gateway to the rest of the world.
In terms of commercial activities Mt. Kenya region hosts half of the leading ten towns and cities in the
country. These include Nakuru, Ruiru, Thika, Naivasha, Kiambu and Kikuyu. Other leading commercial
centres in the region include Murang’a, Nyeri, Embu, Kerugya-Kutus, Meru, Chuka and Olkalau.
