The Oldest Business Organization in Kenya
Of the myriad of business membership organizations operating in Kenya today the Kenya National
Chamber of Commerce and Industry is the oldest. Registered in 1965 the Chamber was part of the new
government’s initial efforts to build a unified nation by discarding the racial institutions that existed at
independence in 1963. Hence the decree by Dr. Gikonyo Kiano, then minister for commerce, that the
European, Asian and African chambers of commerce be amalgamated to form a national body. The
organization was incorporated in 1974.
Upto 1913 the Chamber structure was aligned to that of the government with a head office in Nairobi
with branches in all the districts. Following the promulgation of the new Kenya constitution in 2010 and
the creation of 46 semi-autonomous county governments the KNCCI leadership decided to align the
organization with the new dispensation. Today we therefore have a national office in Nairobi and
chapter offices in the counties. For easier and more efficient coordination there are regional offices that
group together counties roughly based on the defunct provinces of the post-colonial government.
Kncci Central brings together the Kenya central region county chapters of Kiambu, Murang’a, Kirinyaga,
Nyeri and Nyandarua.
